Country Music’s Biggest Night is officially in the books as the lights go down on the 2013 CMA Awards. The night was filled with plenty of music from some of the genre’s biggest stars. The awards featured a few surprise winners and some familiar favorites. ATC is wrapping up the night and revealing how my predictions went.
The night began with an explosive performance by Luke Bryan featuring Florida Georgia Line as the two artists performed hits “That’s My Kind of Night” and “Cruise.” Following the opening was a hysterical opening monologue from the night’s hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. As usual they featured some cleverly written songs that, this year, tackled the Luke Bryan and Zac Brown feud, Miley, twerking, and Obamacare. The guys from Duck Dynasty also made a cameo as hosts performed a parody of the Robin Thicke smash, “Blurred Lines.” From there the night was a mixture of performances, special collaborations, a couple tributes, and of course the announcement of the night’s winners.
Best performances of the night included a fantastic rendition of her new single, “Follow Your Arrow,” by Kacey Musgraves. Little Big Town delivered a stellar version of their newest single, “Sober,” while Lady Antebellum soared on their new single, “Compass.” One of the most emotional moments of the night was Bryan’s second song, “Drink a Beer,” which is an emotional tribute to his late brother and sister. The night though was owned by George Strait and Alan Jackson who teamed up to sing an emotionally stunning version of the George Jones classic, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Other performances included Jason Aldean, Keith Urban with Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker – Rascal Flatts – Jennifer Nettles in a tribute to Kenny Rogers, and a ton more.
The night’s winners were fairly disappointing as the CMA chose to favor the biggest sellers over the year’s critically acclaimed nominees. Florida Georgia Line, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, and Keith Urban each took home two awards. The biggest surprises of the night were Kacey Musgraves upsetting Florida Georgia Line for New Artist of the Year and George Strait claiming his first Entertainer of the Year prize since 1990. I failed miserably in my predictions as I only correctly predicted five categories (Female Vocalist, Vocal Group, Single, Musical Event, and Vocal Duo).
Here’s a complete rundown of the night’s winners:
Entertainer of the Year: George Strait
Male Vocalist of the Year: Blake Shelton
Female Vocalist of the Year: Miranda Lambert
Album of the Year: Based on a True Story – Blake Shelton
Vocal Group of the Year: Little Big Town
Vocal Duo of the Year: Florida Georgia Line
New Artist of the Year: Kacey Musgraves
Single of the Year: “Cruise” – Florida Georgia Line
Song of the Year: “I Drive Your Truck” – Lee Brice (written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, Jimmy Yeary)
Musical Event of the Year: “Highway Don’t Care” – Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban
