The Academy of Country Music awards announced the three artists who will compete for the Top New Artist of the Year award at this year’s show. Which three artists won the three sub-categories (Top New Solo Vocalist, Top New Vocal Group, Top New Vocal Duo)?
Luke Bryan edged out Chris Young and Jamey Johnson for the Top New Solo Artist award. Bryan’s had a breakthrough year with his first number one song, “Do I.” He also released his second album titled Doin’ My Thing which peaked at number two on the country albums chart. This is Bryan’s first ACM award win in two nominations (he was previously nominated for Top New Male Vocalist).
The quartet of Gloriana was chosen as this year’s Top New Vocal Group by edging out the Eli Young Band and the Lost Trailers. Gloriana scored their first top twenty hit with their debut single “Wild At Heart” last year and have since taken off. They won their first American Music Award when they beat favorite Lady Gaga for the Breakthrough Artist Award, which was also fan voted. This is the group’s first ACM nomination and win.
Traditional country duo Joey + Rory were named as the Top New Vocal Duo beating Steel Magnolia and Bomshel. Joey + Rory have been fairly quiet on radio, but that doesn’t stop the duo from continuing to release genuine country music to their fans. This is the second straight year they’ve been nominated for this award and this is their first win.
